Garage Door, we know as a homeowner, part of the fun is being able to fix
problems yourself. No fix is ever complete without multiple visits to your
local home improvement store. However, not every fix should be attempted as a
do-it-yourself project. Some projects are cheaper to have professionals do and
others are simply too dangerous if you are not a trained professional. Several
different garage door repairs fall into the category of too dangerous to try on
your own so call the specialists. These are things you should look for that
require you call professional garage door services in order to have repaired properly and safely.
Gaps and Bends in the Track
Noticing gaps and bends in the track that the garage door follows when being opened or closed
can be an indicator of a bigger problem. Weather can cause contraction and
expansion of certain materials but if the track pieces contract too far apart
that leaves room for the rollers to slip off the track. The track holds the
garage door in place and keeps it moving correctly. If the door slips off while
opening, that’s a lot of weight to fall on a car or person. Once damage has
happened to any of the three tracks, the weight of the door can further
compound the problems leading to the final result of a door falling off the
track. The problem could be smaller and simply a roller in need of replacement
but don’t take chances and have your local professional check it out.
The Garage Door Won’t Open
There are many indicators that something is wrong with your torsion
spring for your garage door but the
door not opening would be a key indicator. If you know the power is on and the
emergency release cord has not been pulled then the odds are something is wrong
with one or both of your springs. The springs do all the heavy lifting on the
garage door. They do this as the wire that comprises the spring is under a lot
of stress from being wrapped tightly into the spring, providing mechanical
energy. If something is wrong with the spring, trying to replace it without the
proper training can cause serious injury because the spring wants to unravel
with extreme force.
The Garage Door Closes With a Bang
Anytime a garage door that closes
quickly and with a bang needs prompt professional attention. That slamming
motion is uncontrolled and could seriously injure someone. It’s also an
indicator of either a problem with the torsion springs or broken cables in some
garage door models. Some garage doors use a pulley system that is driven by the
torsion springs. Failure in the cables can lead to the garage door slamming,
though if they are fully broken the door will fail to move at all with an
attempt to reopen it.
The Garage Door Shimmies Up and Down
Homes shift over time with the
contraction and expansion of the foundation. This can lead to many problems
with a garage door. Changes in the alignment can mean needing to have the
tracks readjusted so the door won’t sag. Other potential culprits include debris
in the tracks, which is easy to fix with a cleaning. However, if your garage
has two torsion springs there is a chance that one is looser than the other.
This can also cause a shimmying motion when the door opens and closes. Call
your local garage door repair specialist to confirm the problem and repair it so no further damage
can occur.
